This blueberry chia seed jam is healthy, only four ingredients, and super easy to make! You’ll definitely be done in less than 15 minutes!
This jam is definitely one of my favorites to make, mostly because it’s so simple! All you have to do is cook the ingredients together, and you’re done! Plus, the recipe is sweetened by just the blueberries and maple syrup, so no cane sugar needed!
This recipe is also really great for gifting! Fill up a mason jar with the jam, stick on a label plus some ribbon, and you’ve got a perfect homemade gift!
I love having this jam on toast, but it also works really well with desserts. (I definitely recommend trying this recipe with some vanilla ice cream and walnuts!) Enjoy it however you’d like!
What are Chia Seeds?
Though they may not seem like much, chia seeds are actually surprisingly nutritious! With lots of fiber and protein, they make a very filling choice. They’re also high in antioxidants, helping to protect your cells from free radicals, which may reduce the risk of heart diseases and cancers. Additionally, chia seeds are full of many important minerals, including iron, calcium, magnesium, and zinc. You can eat them by sprinkling over foods, or allow them to gel up first by combining them with a liquid.
Blueberry Chia Jam Ingredients
- Blueberries
- Chia Seeds
- Maple Syrup : This can be substituted for your sweetener of choice, such as agave syrup, honey, or stevia. Feel free to adjust the amount you use, depending on which sweetener you choose and how sweet you’d like the jam.
- Lemon Juice : I recommend using freshly squeezed lemon juice, but using store-bought will work as well.
Blueberries can be used either frozen or fresh. Keep in mind that frozen fruit will have a slightly higher water, so the cooking time will need to be increased a little.
How to make Blueberry Chia Jam
- Add the blueberries, maple syrup, and lemon juice to a medium saucepan over medium high heat, stirring together.
- As the fruit softens and the mixture bubbles, use a potato masher (or fork) to break the blueberries to your desired texture.
- Stir in chia seeds, then turn the heat down to medium.
- Continue to stir and cook the mixture for around 5-7 minutes, until the jam has thickened.
- Remove your jam from the heat and let it cool completely before storing.
Some Helpful Tips
- If you use frozen blueberries, I recommend waiting a bit for them to thaw before using. Waiting for any ice to melt will help speed up the cooking process, because there won’t be as much liquid to cook out. Using defrosted berries will also make them much easier to mash. However, the jam will turn out pretty much the same either way!
- While cooking the mixture, don’t wait for the jam to get too thick. Instead, stop cooking a bit before it reaches the consistency you prefer. The jam continues to thicken as it cools down, and the added chia seeds will thicken the jam as well.
Blueberry Chia Jam Storage
This blueberry chia seed jam will stay good in the fridge for quite a while! Store it in an air-tight container and it will last around 3 weeks.
Can you freeze this jam?
Yep! If you make a large batch of this jam, you can definitely store some in the freezer for later. Just make sure not to fill your jar all the way to the top, so you have a little empty space for the jam to expand.
